Low carbon farming
Agriculture and food production has a significant role to play in the health of our planet. We recognise the need to find low impact farming systems that are resilient to climate change, are less carbon intensive in their impact, create habitats that allow wildlife and nature to thrive and ultimately see land managed in a way that locks in carbon, so that agriculture is recognised as one of the solutions to deal with climate change.

Plant Based Diets
At M&S we have a team of experts who are passionate about enhancing the uptake of plants and vegetables in our product offer. Through tech and innovation, we’re creating alternative proteins that are responsibly sourced, have excellent sustainability credentials, are nutritionally beneficial, and – of course – taste absolutely delicious.
To meet growing consumer demand for alternative meat and dairy foods, in 2019 we launched Plant Kitchen with 60 products. Since then, we've continued to expand Plant Kitchen and in 2022 launched our new Veggie range, with 16 new lines. As a signatory of the WWF's Retailers' Commitment for Nature, we recognise that encouraging people to eat a more plant-based diet can contribute to tackling climate change because of the impact of meat and dairy production on the climate.
We’re committed to helping our customers eat more plants by making meat-free options more accessible and appealing and providing innovative, great tasting plant based, vegan and vegetarian options in our Foodhall. Over two-thirds of our food sales (tonnage) comes from fruit and vegetables, vegetarian and vegan products and we will continue to measure this metric to reflects the healthy and sustainable behaviours we want to drive in our customers’ baskets. As with all our Plan A initiatives, responsibility for delivery ultimately sits with our ESG Committee, a sub-committee of the Board, that meets on a quarterly basis.
Sparking Change
In early 2022, following a rigorous pilot programme, we ran the ‘Sparking Change National Challenge’, sharing a range of resources designed to help our 14 million Sparks customers eat healthily and waste less food.
Grounded in behaviour change theory, the Sparking Change pilot, run in partnership with behaviour change experts Hubbub, focused on four areas – protein from plants, cutting food waste, cooking from scratch, and sustainable living beyond the kitchen.
