Our Property Requirements
We pay a finder’s fee! 1.5% of purchase price or 10% of annual rent when introducing a site previously unknown. Please send site ideas to [email protected].
Our store rotation programme is about making sure we have the right stores, in the right place, with the right space. We currently have 247 full line stores across the UK, which will move to 180 higher quality, higher productivity full line stores over the next three years - achieved by rotating the estate in 110 locations.
This is mixture of closures, relocation to food, and relocation to another full line store. We will also increase our Food offering from 316 to 420 stores.
The performance of our recently relocated and renewed stores, give us the confidence to go faster in our plan. Our investment in stores not only delivers a better experience for customers and colleagues, it boosts local communities with new job creation and will help us deliver a more sustainable estate in every sense.
Supporting the Omni-Channel Shopping Experience
Our store rotation programme is underpinned by a substantial investment in new digital services to offer an omnichannel service to customers.
This includes the roll-out of Digital Click & Collect to 130 stores across the UK, enabling customers to collect their parcel in under 60 seconds, and Scan & Shop which is used by around 33,000 customers each week and lets customers use their phone to scan and bag food items as they shop, directly from the M&S app.
Building a Sustainable Store Estate in Every Sense
In 2021 we reset our Plan A programme with a singular focus on becoming a net zero business across our entire value chain by 2040 – ten years earlier than the Government’s UK-wide strategy.
We are making progress against our commitment by continuing to install more efficient LED lighting, smart building controls, optimising voltage and removing F-gas across our estate. We have also introduced fridge doors and are working with external suppliers to produce and consume renewable energy across 18 of our freehold stores as a pilot. Our partnership with BP pulse has led to the delivery of ultra-fast Electric Vehicle charging points at 10 stores with another 20 planned for next year.
Releasing Value From Our Older Sites
Our accelerated store rotation programme plans to modernise stores - creating 180 Full Line stores and 420 owned food stores by FY25/26 and a retail environment to meet the needs of our customers.
Funding it will require releasing development value that exists in some older sites across the UK. We're in a unique position to unlock this value, as we own around 40% of our estate - a good example being our Marble Arch site.
