Our approach
We believe polyester has a place within our fibre mix, but at M&S, we are committed to only using recycled polyester by 2025 - as part of our wider raw material targets.
Polyester is so popular as a material due to its versatility and durability – however, as with other synthetic materials, we know that using polyester in our clothes provides challenges to our environment.
Recycled polyester is indeed considered a preferred option to virgin polyester because it avoids the extraction of new resourced and the use of energy intensive processing.
All recycled polyester used in our Clothing and Home products is certified against industry standards. That is standard such as Global recycled standard (GRS) and recycled claims standards (RCS). Our supply chain is mandated to adhere to both standards to ensure the accurate verification of recycled content, with the appropriate certification in place to maintain a complete chain of custody.
In 2023/24, 70% of the polyester we used across Clothing & Home was verified recycled. We will continue to work with our supplier partners to implement our polyester sourcing requirements, which are set out in our M&S Recycled Material Sourcing Policy.
