  • Eight out of 10 best-selling lines across party range are separates

This festive season, customers are embracing versatility when it comes to occasion dressing. Rather than buying outfits for one-off events, they are investing in pieces that work harder - stylish separates that move effortlessly from the office to evening plans.

At M&S, customers are shopping more “desk-to-dinner” looks, highlighting a demand for flexibility and wardrobe versatility.

The shift is seen most prominently in sales of luxe fabrics and modern tailoring, with velvet blazers and trousers leading the charge. The velvet blazer alone has sold almost 10,000 units; satin wide-leg trousers have become a wardrobe staple, selling over 29,000 pairs while statement embellished knitwear is playing a starring role in elevating everyday looks for night-time.

In fact, eight of the top ten best-selling party lines this season are separates - a strong indicator that customers are prioritising versatility.

  2. Cotton Rich Velvet Straight Leg Trousers, ÂŁ46
  3. Fluid Velvet Wide Leg Trousers, ÂŁ40

Maddy Evans, Director of M&S Woman, said: “This season it is all about versatile pieces that move effortlessly throughout the day. Our customers are looking for outfits that feel put together for the morning meeting but still work for an evening out. Think velvet jackets styled with jeans for a modern twist, or lace skirts balanced with oversized knits. It’s about mixing textures and layering in a way that’s easy yet elevated.”

The trend reflects a broader cultural shift with consumers increasingly seeking value in longevity, choosing pieces that can be worn multiple ways rather than reserved for one occasion.
