- Carole Caley, Mandy Powell, Mary Leaver, Cherry Bradley, and Wendy Ross celebrate a combined 150 years of service for the high-street retailer
Five exceptional colleagues at M&S Douglas are marking a remarkable milestone together, celebrating over 150 years of service at M&S. From festive temp roles to leadership positions, each team member has played a vital role in the store’s history.
The colleagues, Carole Caley, Mandy Powell, Mary Leaver, Cherry Bradley and Wendy Ross have been at the heart of every chapter of M&S Douglas; from the store’s move to its current location in 1997, through a major extension in 2002, and now as the wider store renewal continues ahead of the fully transformed Douglas store launching in spring 2026.
Whether it’s leading charity initiatives, mentoring new team members, or simply sharing a laugh across the store, their contributions have helped make M&S Douglas more than just a store with each and every one of them playing a vital role in delivering exceptional shopping experiences for customers.
As the colleagues celebrate this incredible achievement, they reflect on the memories, milestones, and friendships that have defined their careers.
Speaking on her 28 year career with M&S, Carole Caley commented: “Every day brings something new, and the variety of roles I’ve had has kept me refreshed and motivated. From starting in Foods as a Sales Assistant to being promoted to Section Coordinator, I’ve loved the responsibility and the chance to work with so many fantastic colleagues.
The people here make all the difference, and I’ve made lifelong friends along the way. Being a part of charity events like the Bra Dash has been a highlight, bringing the team and community together for great causes.
"M&S has always supported my growth and encouraged me to try new things. The positive environment, the fun we have as a team, and the pride in serving our customers are what make M&S a truly special place to work. As Wendy and I get ready to celebrate this next chapter together at our retirement party, it’s lovely to look back on the memories we’ve made over the years and the wonderful people who’ve made M&S feel like home."
Mandy Powell began her journey with M&S as a Christmas temp 29 years ago, adding: “I started my career here alongside Caroline, who is now our store manager - we were even on our induction together! Over my time at M&S, I’ve worked in every section of the store, and have now served as a Safety Officer for over 20 years. The team is the reason I’ve stayed so long. My son even surprised me one year by joining us one Christmas! I still love helping on the turkey team during the festive season.
“M&S has given me so many opportunities to grow and develop, both professionally and personally. The supportive environment, the friendships I’ve made, and the chance to be part of such a vibrant team make every day rewarding and I’m so proud to be part of this team."
Mary Leaver, who transferred to the Douglas store in 1999 after starting in Richmond 37 years ago, has seen the business evolve and thrive. She comments: “I’ve enjoyed seeing how M&S has evolved to meet the needs of customers. From the ever-changing uniforms to celebrating major company milestones like the 125th anniversary gala, every experience has been memorable.
“What stands out most is the camaraderie and support I’ve found here. M&S has given me the chance to connect with so many wonderful people, both colleagues and customers, and I feel a real sense of pride in our store. The positive culture and encouragement from the team make every day special, and I’m excited for what the future holds with M&S.”
Looking Back at 30 years of service for M&S, Cherry Bradley said: “I’m very proud of my 30 years of working at M&S. The thing that’s made my job special has to be the people. One thing that has never changed over all the years is how nice the staff are. Everyone is always happy to say hello and our management look after us well.
“In all honesty, a specific highlight struggles to come to mind, because pretty much every day at M&S is a positive one. I enjoy coming into work because I know whoever is on shift will be smiling back. M&S has been a great place to work for; I would recommend it to anyone.”
Wendy Ross has been reminiscing about 36 years at M&S as she prepares for her retirement in March: “It’s hard to believe I’ve been here that long, I started in Menswear and eventually worked in most departments, including a short stint in the food hall. I suppose I’ve done it all, really."
For Wendy, the people are what made the experience so memorable. "We have a great team, and I’ve made so many good friends. It’s like a proper community here, a real family. I have some wonderful memories, including some fabulous nights out!"
While emotional about leaving, Wendy is looking forward to the next chapter. She plans to return to the store as a customer, particularly for the M&S food selection, and is especially excited for a joint leaving party with her friend, Carole, “That’ll be a great way to close this chapter.”
As she prepares to celebrate the milestones of her team members, Caroline Brand, Store Manager at M&S Douglas, said: “It’s truly inspiring to celebrate these five incredible colleagues. Carole, Mandy, Mary, Cherry and Wendy all show dedication, warmth, and commitment to our customers, and play a vital role in making M&S Douglas the store it is today. This store would not be the same without any of them and we are so happy to be marking this wonderful achievement. Massive congratulations to you all from everyone on the team - here's to many more years!”
