A huge thank you from M&S Cafe - 2014 was our best Coffee Morning ever!

Drinking coffee and eating cake are delicious pastimes, wouldn’t you agree? Well, that was certainly the feeling amongst our employees and customers this year as Marks & Spencer played its part in helping to raise much needed funds for our charity partner, Macmillan Cancer Support.

Macmillan undertakes fantastic work for people affected by cancer, and for the fifth year running, M&S Cafés up and down the country were excited and proud to be hosting their very own ‘World’s Biggest Coffee Morning’ events. They certainly rose to the challenge.

It was heart-warming to welcome thousands of customers through our doors to get involved, and to see them enjoy a variety of entertainment. From Downton Abbey themed stores to Mad Hatters tea parties. Employees and customers made a huge effort to make this year’s Coffee Morning the most enjoyable and successful one to date.

World’s Biggest Coffee Morning is a hugely important event on the fundraising calendar for Macmillan, and for M&S, and amongst all the fun was the knowledge for stores and customers alike that they were raising money  to support more people affected by cancer. Sadly, 1 in 2 of us will receive a cancer diagnosis in our lifetime - so this really is a huge issue, and one we simply cannot ignore.

Our partnership with Macmillan started in 2010 with M&S Café becoming their official World's Biggest Coffee Morning partner. The relationship has since grown and to date we have helped raise a staggering £3.9 million.  This money funds vital Macmillan services in local communities across the UK.

This year, M&S donated 5p from every coffee and slice of cake sold in our cafés, and 20p from every Victoria Sponge cake sold in our Food Halls throughout September.  A set of fun bespoke Macmillan badges designed by renowned British designer Celia Birtwell and a ‘Macmillan Cupcake Kit’ were also available for a suggested donation price of £2 each.

Together with the amazing fundraising efforts of M&S Cafés this Coffee Morning you helped us raise a fantastic over £800,000 for Macmillan - our most successful Coffee Morning EVER! Thanks to other M&S’ support throughout the year we’ve helped raise over £1.1million this year! And, with the sale of Charity Christmas cards for Macmillan this Christmas time, we’re confident that we’ll top over £1.2million in funds raised in 2014!

It is great to see the support of our employees and customers make a real difference to the lives of people affected by cancer. Through the money you’ve helped us raise, one of the Macmillan posts M&S have been able to fund includes Katie Sutton, the Macmillan Project Lead for Cancer Follow Up Redesign at University College London Hospital (UCLH), you can find out more about her vital role here . This is  just one of the many Macmillan services and posts that your generous donations are helping to make a reality.

We would like to say a big thank you to all of our customers who came out to support Coffee Morning this year, as well as those who supported the charity through their purchases in our Food Halls and Cafés throughout the month of September. Many pots of tea and coffee were enjoyed, cake eaten, and lots of laughs had!
