Turning Retail Purple

Here at M&S, we meet and serve customers from all parts of the world, all walks of life, and with all sorts of qualities which make them unique. Our aim is to make every moment special for each and every customer and provide them with the individual service they require to ensure they have a great customer experience. This is why we are delighted to be supporting Purple Tuesday, the UK's first accessible shopping day, established to recognise the importance and needs of disabled consumers and promote inclusive shopping.

We have more than 20 million visitors to M&S stores each week so the accessibility of our stores as well as our website is extremely important to us.  Purple Tuesday is a great opportunity to increase awareness and understanding of the challenges our disabled customers face so that we can improve the shopping experience for them.

The importance of accessibility is not new to M&S. We have been working hard to improve the accessibility of our stores and our products, with initiatives such as our AccessAble Accessibility Guides and our Easy Dressing Range to name two. However, Purple Tuesday provides us with a great opportunity to do more. This week we have launched our refreshed staff training focusing on both visible and hidden disabilities, we are rolling out 'Not every disability is visible' signs to our accessible toilets, and promoting our AccessAble Accessibility Guides by introducing signs at our Store Entrances. You will also see M&S Marble Arch lit up in purple on Tuesday to show our support.

Purple Tuesday isn't just about one day, it is about making sustainable changes. As part of an interview with Drapers Magazine Jo Moran, Head of Customer Service said, “We want to make this part of what we do every day."

We are on a journey at M&S to improve accessibility in our stores and online, and whilst we have done some great work over the past couple of years there is still much more to do. Purple Tuesday aims to drive even more action across retail to support our customers, and I hope that with such fantastic support from across the industry it can be the start of truly turning retail purple!
