In April 2014 we opened the doors to M&S Monks Cross at York’s Vangarde Shopping Park. With 18,000 square feet of stylish womenswear, 1,500 square feet of the world’s best beauty secrets and 14,700 square feet of beautifully made homeware, plus a stunning 170 seat Café offering panoramic views of York Minster, this has been one of our most exciting openings yet.
As well as being a fantastic space to showcase our collections, M&S Monks Cross is one of our Sustainable Learning Stores, where we’ve been able to test and evaluate new operational methods to help us in our goal of becoming the world’s most sustainable major retailer.
In a first for M&S, we installed 600 solar panels on the roof, which powers the Café and 10% of the store as a whole. The store is flooded with natural light, thanks to 60 architectural roof lights. Outside, two huge green living walls, totalling over 1,800 square feet, are testament to our environmental credentials, and makes the store look fantastic.
Other features include a 60,000 litre tank for recycling rainwater, refurbished trolleys, recycled shelving and electric car charging points! Importantly, absolutely no waste was sent to landfill during the building of the store.
Store manager Hilary Wilkinson, said: “The feedback from our customers on all features has been very positive, with the Beauty section and Autograph department, along with the striking green living walls, being key talking points.”
