Assistant technolgists
Our Fabric and Garment teams are responsible for the quality and innovation our customers associate with M&S clothing.
Based at our Waterside Head Office in London, they keep an eye on the latest developments and assess whether they could be used to enhance our own lines. They work closely with our suppliers to ensure that our garments continue to set new standards in terms of style, quality and value.
We also have a small team that look after products within our Home, Gifting and Beauty division. These products tend to be very diverse and, as such, need people with product-related experience.
What would my role be?
As a trainee, you’ll spend up to two years working in different areas until you’ve gained the knowledge and experience to take technical responsibility for a full range. A key part of your role during this period will be to develop good relationships with your suppliers and other members of your team. You’ll spend a lot of time with qualified technologists, learning about reviews, studying targets and ensuring that the products we select delight our customers. Plus you’ll help us to carry out regular testing to make sure our lines continue to be a first choice for our customers.
How will you develop me?
The majority of your training will be on-the-job, although you will receive specific training on our various codes of practice. You’ll also spend time working with our specialist tools and making clear recommendations on business opportunities. A technologist will help you drive innovation and support you in due diligence testing.
What sort of qualities are you looking for?
You’ll need to have a recognised technical qualification like an ATI, an HND or a graduate degree. Excellent communication skills are also a must. And, if you’re the type of person who enjoys working through problems and coming up with solutions, so much the better.
What happens after I’ve completed the scheme?
Once you’ve completed your training period, which is normally around two years, you’ll be appointed as a technologist. From there, we’ll continue to help you develop your skills and give you every change to broaden your experience. You’ll progress through different roles – but how quickly you move forward will depend on your ability and desire to succeed.
