FAQs
What qualifications do I need?
The trainee management programme is open to anyone whose highest qualification is two A-levels or equivalent.
Who do I contact if I need help during the online application process?
Click on the ‘help’ link at the top of the application page and follow the instructions.
What positions are available?
All our roles are in retail selling. The first year you are trained up to be a Section Manager and the second year a Commercial Manager.
When is the closing date?
The closing date for applications is the 12th June. We suggest you apply as soon as possible, as due to the popularity, we may shut the application process early.
When will I start?
The scheme starts on 7th September 2009.
Where will I be trained?
Although most of your training will take place in an assigned learning store, you will also need to attend workshops at one of our Retail Training Academies. In some cases, we will ask you to put what you have learnt into practice in a store other than your learning store.
Can I work in my home town? And if not, will I receive help with relocating?
You will need to be regionally mobile. After the first year you will move to a different store within the region to complete your training. We will do our best to find you a location in your preferred area of the county, but this is not always possible. After completing your training, you’ll be expected to move to another store in the UK to take up relevant development opportunities. Usually this means relocating and, if that’s the case, we’ll provide you with assistance.
How long is the programme?
The programme lasts for 24 months.
Will I have a company induction?
Yes. You’ll be invited to attend a welcome day before you start, and then you’ll have a local and corporate induction within your first few weeks.
What hours will I have to work?
As part of the management team, you will be contracted to work 40 hours per week.
Do I have to wear a corporate uniform?
You don’t have to wear a uniform, but if you’re working in our stores, we do ask you to wear M&S clothing (this will be heavily discounted).
Is there a long-term career for me at M&S?
Absolutely. In fact, career development is one of the things we pride ourselves on. A large number of our most senior managers have been with us for many years. While working their way up, they’ve gained experience in different roles, different areas of the business and, in some cases, different countries. There’s a good chance you’ll be able to do the same. Why not listen to Mark Burton, General Manager of his career path.
What is the social life like?
It’s certainly not all work, work, work. You’ll probably find yourself going out with your store and head office colleagues fairly regularly. And M&S trainees from all over the country love getting together and having a good time.
How can I found out more about M&S?
The best way is probably to visit our About us section.
