Application & Assessment

With so much on offer, and only a limited number of places available, we expect competition to be fierce. Especially as the programme is open to both internal and external candidates, and anyone whose highest qualification is two A-levels (or equivalent) can apply. That’s why we’ve put a robust assessment process in place – so each and every one of you has a fair and equal chance of finding success.

We will be taking applications for the 2009 programme from 6th April until 12th June. If you're an internal M&S candidate you will need Line Manager support, so we suggest you let them know as soon as possible. Whatever your background, we’ll ask you to complete a verbal and numerical test and then our online-based occupational personality questionnaire. We will then conduct a mutually convenient telephone interview and if you’re successful, you’ll be invited to attend one of our assessment centres, held nationwide during the first two weeks of July 2009.

Over the course of the day, there’ll be a tour of one of our stores, allowing you a peek behind the scenes to see what makes us tick. There’ll also be a number of exercises for you to take part in. These will include a group activity, an analysis exercise and presentation, a competency interview and coaching task. But don’t worry – before the day gets going, we’ll make sure you know what kind of skills and competencies we’re looking for.

And if you really dazzle us with your talents? Then we’ll award you with a place on our programme, and begin transforming you into a Commercial Manager.

The Trainee Management Scheme is currently closed. We'll be
re-opening applications again in April 2010 so remember to pay
us a visit then.
