From day one, you’ll be expected to make real decisions about real issues in the real world, as you take on a series of placements in different areas of the business. By the end of it, you’ll be ready for your first big management role. And that means substantial responsibilities. Leading a medium-sized team, for example, or running an area of the business worth millions of pounds.
What roles can I apply for?
Most graduates apply for a place on our Selling scheme (where you become a manager in one of our stores). For this it doesn’t matter what degree you’ve done. We’re much more interested in the enthusiasm you show for retail, your interpersonal skills and your ambition to succeed.
Alternatively, you could join us on our 18-month store-based HR programme. We also have a variety of head office schemes, including IT, design, buying, merchandising, garment and food technology, and product development. To join one of these areas, you’ll need to have done a related degree.
When does the scheme start?
There are two start dates for the 2010 Retail Selling scheme: one in April, one in September. When you join, after spending a week in your store or department, you’ll be invited to a graduate induction day where you’ll hear from some of the wider M&S team and gain more knowledge about our business. However if you are applying for any other graduate roles the start date will be September 2010.
How structured is it?
While you do have to work your way through a number of placements, the scheme is flexible enough to adapt to people’s different learning needs. Some people will progress quickly, while others may take a bit more time and need a bit more support. Either way you’ll find our stores and head office great learning environments, where you’ll receive all the training and encouragement you need to excel in your chosen role.
