Miranda
My name’s Miranda Tate and I am the Kidswear Commercial Manager at Fosse Park and Late Night Duty Manager.
My role as a Commercial Manager is to be a real trader on the floor, so I need to maximise every opportunity I’ve got. If I see opportunities in any area of my department, it’s all about looking at them and seeing what I can do to improve those sales. With regard to the staff on the sales floor, it’s for me to really drive their development, to make them the best in their product knowledge for their different departments.
A big success in the Kidswear department is definitely the T76 Schoolwear. This pair of trousers – £3.50 – took over £1,000 in Fosse Park last week. The business lesson from this, is that even though it’s worth a little amount of money, it’s the small amounts of money that make the big sales at M&S. Watch the pennies, and the pounds will take care of themselves!
The reason why I chose the M&S scheme, is because it was the only scheme that really appealed to me; I wanted a career in retail where I knew I’d go far. And with the development opportunities that M&S gives you, and also, the relocation and benefit packages, it was the best one for me to go to.
The training that you get on this scheme is two ways – it’s on the job, which means you’ll be shown how to do a task and then you’re expected to deliver it. And there’s also classroom training where you’ll go to three of our graduate centres and you’ll be taught by outside professionals on how to do your job. You get to meet the other graduates, so that’s one of the best features of that training. and you get to network with everybody else that’s in the same boat, so you get to make new contacts. It’s a fantastic scheme, I’ve enjoyed every minute of it.
My advice for anybody who wants to join the scheme, is go for it, the sky really is the limit with the opportunities you’re going to be given. So, it’s a fantastic way to start your career as a graduate!
