Merchandising

Merchandisers analyse sales and ensure the right stock is in the right store in the right quantities.

There are merchandising teams for each area of the store (such as Menswear and Lingerie). Each year, we give a limited number of graduates the opportunity to join one of these teams.

What would my role be?

During your time on the Trainee Assistant Merchandising scheme, you’ll get involved in everything from the analysis of sales and production to ordering, range planning and promotional activities.

How will you help me develop?

You’ll receive training on the systems you’ll need to use in your day-to-day role but the majority of your learning will come from working alongside experienced members of our team. From them, you’ll build up enough knowledge to succeed in the role you’ll take on at the end of the programme.

What sort of qualities are you looking for?

You’ll need to have a business, retail or related degree. Good communication skills are a must, as you’ll need to be able to build up good working relationships with designers and suppliers. On top of that, you’ll need to be confident and highly organised, since things can get quite hectic, especially just before a range is launched.

What happens after I’ve finished the scheme?

It’s likely that you’ll start as an assistant merchandiser, with responsibility for a small range in Ladieswear, Home or Childrenswear, for example. Then it’s all about gaining experience and slowly taking on more responsibility. From there, the next step is to become a fully-fledged merchandiser, which will see you taking charge of a specific area within a department.
