IT

Our IT group is based across Paddington in London and Stockley Park, near Heathrow.

It’s split into six areas, three of which deliver IT systems for business change. The Growth team is involved in future international and multi-channel plans, while Foundation looks at reporting and internal systems to provide Management Information to enable decision making, and Trading & Supply Chain which focuses on operational excellence in GM and Food. The other three areas in the Group are Infrastructure & Application Services who run our exisiting IT systems; Strategy & Architecture who shape the long-term IT road map; and Central Services who provide the overall governance framework and deliver analysis, change management and communications.

The training programme is split into two six-month assignments within different areas of the IT Group, where you'll have the opporunity to gain experience in both analytical and technical roles. So by the end of the scheme, you'll have a better idea about where your future could lie.

While working primarily in one of these areas, the training programme will give you exposure to all of them, and you’ll gain experience in both analytical and technical roles. So by the end of the scheme, you’ll be able to make an informed decision about where your future should lie.

What would I do in an analyst role?

You may be responsible for delivering the business requirements for a system under development.

How about a technical management role?

On the technical side of things, you’ll learn about the design process and assist in managing the development of applications largely in collaboration with third party organisations gaining a better understanding of how our systems work.

How will you help me develop?

The majority of your learning will be on-the-job, although you’ll also receive specific technical training (e.g. requirements analysis or modelling techniques).  You’ll also undertake a placement in one of our stores, with the aim of developing a better understanding of how the business operates.

What sort of qualities are you looking for?

You do not need to have a specific IT-related degree, however, you need to have an appreciation of technology and be a logical thinker who enjoys working through problems and coming up with new ways of solving them. Strong interpersonal and communication skills will also be key as you’ll have to work with business colleagues who may be non-technical, as well as working with third party organisations, who may be highly technical, to deliver solutions or services. Managerial skills like task and time management are also crucial. Apart from that, we look for people who are keen to learn and can work well in a team.

What happens after I’ve completed the scheme?

After you’ve completed the scheme, you’ll be appointed an analytical role in any one of the areas within the IT Group, depending on your skills and where your interests lie.
