Buying

Buyers are responsible for developing a product offer that meets our customers’ expectations of quality and value. There are buying teams for each area of the store (such as Womenswear and Home), and they are always a couple of seasons ahead. So in Winter 2009, they’ll be working on up to three lines for the Spring/Summer range in 2010. Secure one of the limited places on this scheme, and you’ll get to support the delivery of our ranges. In doing so, you’ll gain the experience and skills you need to take ownership of a small range at the end of the 12-month programme.

What would my role be?

As a trainee assistant buyer, you’ll learn about the process of a taking a product from initial design through to finished article. Obviously this process will differ depending on the products you’re dealing with, but in general terms all buying roles involve briefing designers, liaising with suppliers, testing concepts and launching the final product in store.

How will you help me develop?

You’ll receive training on the systems you’ll need to use in your day-to-day role but the majority of your learning will come from working alongside experienced members of our team. From them, you’ll build up enough knowledge to succeed in the role you’ll take on at the end of the programme.

What sort of qualities are you looking for?

You’ll need to have a fashion-related degree, or similar for a role in Home. Good communication skills are a must, as you’ll need to be able to build up good working relationships with designers and suppliers. On top of that, you’ll need to be confident and highly organised, since things can get quite hectic, especially just before a range is launched.

What happens after I've finished the scheme?

It’s likely that you’ll start as an assistant buyer, with responsibility for a small range in Ladieswear, Home or Childrenswear, for example. Then it’s all about gaining experience and slowly taking on more responsibility until you’re ready to move up into a junior buyer role, which normally happens after around two years. From there, the next step is to become a fully-fledged buyer, which will see you taking charge of a specific area within a department.
