FAQs

What qualifications do I need?

For the Selling and HR schemes, you'll need to have at least a 2:1 degree in any discipline. For the other schemes, you’ll need a degree related to your area. Check the graduate roles link for more information.

Do I need to have graduated recently?

No. Providing you have graduated, we do not stipulate when you need to have taken your degree.

Who do I contact if I need help during the online application process?

Click on the ‘help’ link at the top of the application page and follow the instructions.

Can I apply for both a store and a head office position?

Unfortunately not. If you’re not sure which position to apply for, have a good read through all the role descriptions and watch the video profiles. This should help you decide which area is most appropriate to you. Remember, competition will be fierce (especially for the limited number of head office roles), so it’s best if you focus all your energies on one or the other.

When will I start?

Most of the schemes start in September 2010. For the Selling scheme, however, there are two start dates: one is in April and the other is in September.

Can I work in my home town? And if not, will I receive help with relocating?

If you’re on a store-based scheme, then we’ll do our best to find you a location in your chosen area of the country. But this is not always possible. After completing your training, you’ll be expected to move to another store in the UK to take up relevant development opportunities. Usually this means relocating and, if that’s the case, we’ll provide you with assistance.

IT graduates have a dual contract and will work at Stockley Park, near Heathrow, which is our IT centre, and also at our head office in Central London. All other head office roles are based in Central London.

How long is the programme?

The Selling programme is typically 12 months long, although this may vary slightly as different people progress at different rates. Our other schemes last between 18 months and two years.

Will I have a company induction?

Yes. You’ll be invited to attend a welcome day before you start, and then you’ll have a local and corporate induction within your first few weeks.

What hours will I have to work?

You will be contracted to work 40 hours per week.

Do I have to wear a corporate uniform?

You don’t have to wear a uniform, but if you’re working in our stores, we do ask you to wear M&S clothing (this will be heavily discounted).

Is there a long-term career for me at M&S?

Absolutely. In fact, career development is one of the things we pride ourselves on. A large number of our most senior managers have been with us for many years. While working their way up, they’ve gained experience in different roles, different areas of the business and, in some cases, different countries. There’s a good chance you’ll be able to do the same.

What is the social life like?

It’s certainly not all work, work, work. You’ll probably find yourself going out with your store and head office colleagues fairly regularly. And M&S graduates from all over the country love getting together and having a good time.

How can I find out more about M&S?

The best way is probably to visit our corporate website

When is the closing date?

The closing date is Friday 11th December 2009, with the exception of the BPP scheme in Food Technology which closes on Friday 30th October 2009.
