Marks & Spencer Sets up Asian Earthquake Appeal

Marks & Spencer has announced today that it has set-up the Marks & Spencer Earthquake Appeal to provide aid for those affected by the Asian Earthquake.

Customers can make donations by any method of payment in all Marks & Spencer stores. Employees can also make donations, which will be exempt from tax, through Gift Aid. The Company will be donating £250,000 to the Appeal and Marks & Spencer's Chairman and executive directors have personally donated £50,000.

All money raised will be sent to the Disasters Emergency Committee (DEC) fund to support both the emergency relief efforts and the longer term reconstruction projects.

Marks & Spencer has already sent £3,000 of clothing to Heathrow and Gatwick airports, via the Red Cross, for returning British tourists who have lost their possessions.

Chief Executive, Stuart Rose said: "Our thoughts are with all those affected by this unprecedented disaster and we hope the monies raised through the Appeal will help the extremely valuable work that the DEC is doing. We are in close contact with our suppliers in the area to gauge what further support such as clothing or food might be needed."
