Marks & Spencer Announces New Director of Marketing

Marks & Spencer is pleased to announce that Alice Avis has been appointed as the new Director of Marketing and e-commerce, with effect from 20 January 2003. Alice will report directly to Roger Holmes, Chief Executive and will sit on the Group Operating Committee.

Alice's career combines strong marketing experience and a successful track record in transforming international brands, together with experience in advertising, strategy and e-commerce.

Her career began in account management at the advertising agency BMP. In 1995 she joined Guinness plc with global marketing responsibility for Gordons, Dewars and Tanqueray and was subsequently appointed Global Brand Director of Johnnie Walker, at Diageo plc, where she rapidly reversed its declining sales and renewed the brand image. 2000 saw her join the start up e-commerce business, Flutter.com, as Marketing Director. For the past year, Alice has run her own strategic marketing consultancy. She holds an MBA from INSEAD.

Alice Avis said: "Marks & Spencer is a great brand and one that I have always wanted to work with. I am very much looking forward to joining the company at such an exciting point in its history and to the challenge of strengthening the marketing and the brand."

Roger Holmes, Chief Executive, said: "We are very pleased to have secured Alice as part of our team. She brings a combination of analytical and creative thinking with a strong consumer and customer focus. Alice's skills and experience will be invaluable as we continue to drive the marketing capability across the business. We look forward to her joining Marks & Spencer."
