M&S Launches Pink Port

M&S has announced the launch of Pink Port, a brand new Port style, which will hit the shelves at the end of the month.  The last time a new port style was launched Late Bottle Vintage Port in 1970.

Moving away from the traditional masculine image of Port and targeting the younger, female Port drinker, the M&S Pink Port is light in style, bright pink in colour with fresh fruit aromas.  The palate combines ripe berry and fruit flavours.  The sugar level of the M&S Pink Port is equal to that of other Ruby Ports, contributing to the smooth and round palate, whilst the acidity level is finely tuned to ensure the right balance and crisp dry finish.

Since the M&S Pink Port is made from classic red Port grapes, the challenge faced by the winemakers was to capture varietal characteristics, without allowing the intense tannins to dominate.  The vinification method ensures careful colour extraction to avoid astringent tannins and is followed by cold settling and cool fermentation to enhance freshness and elegance.

Whilst the majority of Port is still sold during the pre-Christmas period, styles such as White Port and chilled Tawny Port are attracting more year round consumption.

The launch of the M&S Pink Port is set to transform the Port category and attract a far more varied consumer demographic.  The M&S Pink Port is best served chilled or over ice as a refreshing summer drink, or as an accompaniment to dessert.
