Marks & Spencer Launches a Collection of Eco-friendly Furniture

This February sees the launch of the Fern Collection, a range of eco-friendly upholstered furniture.  Made using a combination of eco-materials, including plastic drinks bottles and Fairtrade certified cotton, in an M&S supplier ‘eco-factory’, customers can rest easy knowing they’re doing their bit for the environment whilst relaxing at home.

The Fern Collection includes a large 2-seater sofa (£899), a large 2-seater sofa bed (£1,199), a 2-seater sofa (£799) and an armchair (£599).  All pieces have a wooden frame, sourced from sustainable wood, and cream Fairtrade certified cotton loose covers.  They are filled with a combination of Ecoflex™ foam (a castor oil–based foam, containing 20% renewable resources, compared to 0% in traditional sofas) and plastic made from 70% post-consumer waste.  This includes plastic drinks bottles and 122 are used to make every 2-seater sofa.

The range is manufactured by Westbridge in North Wales, M&S’s upholstered furniture factory designated as one of the company’s three ‘eco-factories’ in autumn 2007.   The factory has started some of its short term initiatives - pioneering sustainable manufacturing and aims to be carbon neutral, use renewable energy and send no waste to landfills by 2012.

The Fern collection will be available to purchase online at www.marksandspencer.com and in selected stores (Camberley, Marble Arch and Bluewater).  Launching on the 25th of February to coincide with Fairtrade Fortnight starting on 23rd February, there is the added bonus of an eco-delivery service.  Products are delivered in 100% recyclable packaging and are included in M&S’s free eco furniture delivery scheme, in which 10,000 trees are planted every year to offset emissions from its furniture deliveries.

So, without compromising on style or value, the Fern Collection will help you lead a greener lifestyle and make a real difference.
