Carbon trading
M&S supports the development of a mandatory carbon trading framework covering retail sector activities. We have played an active role in shaping the proposed Carbon Reduction Commitment which will cover all metered building energy consumption from 2010.
Carbon offsets
We plan to use carbon offsets to reduce our carbon emissions as a last resort. However, we believe that robust carbon offsets could play an important role where no other options are available.
Carbon labels
We have contributed to the development of The Carbon Trust’s Publicly Available Specification 2050 on how to measure the carbon footprint of a product. We believe that much research and development, as well as the testing of other options, is required before Carbon Labelling is extended.
Bio-diesel
Since originally announcing our Plan A commitment to use more bio-diesel, we have discussed some of the environmental issues associated with its production with our stakeholders. We’ve decided to stop using bio-diesel until sustainable sources of supply are available.
